WhackStar Productions changed providers several times during 1999 and 2000 searching for a company that could provide us with direct connectivity to the internet at a reasonable price. Finding such a provider wasn't easy. These types of service providers aren't cheap; nor are they all that stable. Dotcom businesses are closing their doors at an astonishing rate so it was critical to find a company that wasn't dependent upon venture capital, stock market swings and pending IPO offerings.
Our criteria was simple. We
needed a company that did not depend upon an upstream provider. We needed a
company that WAS the upstream provider. At first we moved our servers to one
company and though they could provide us with the type of connections needed,
they were very pricey and we had to pass those costs on to our clients. NOT a good solution for us.
We finally found Hurricane Electric and when asked "Who is your upstream
provider" their answer was... "We are!". By selecting a
company that was not dependent upon telephone lines and the like, the
possibility of our servers, and YOUR sites going down was removed. WSP servers
are plugged directly into the net via multiple
fiber optic OC-3 connections. No modems, no dialups, no hassles connecting to your site via our
servers.
Our UNIX servers are using a base configuration of FreeBSD O/S with Apache HTTPD web server software. We are connected to a full OC3 (155 megabits/second) connection. We have been running continuously since the move not including maintenance downtime. All Clients receive advance notice when maintenance is called for. In addition to UNIX, we also offer FrontPage98 and 2000 Server Support at no extra charge.
